You will probably feel a slight bump from the vertebrae there. Next, hold the tape in place and go down over the shoulder all the way to the wrist. Do not hold the measuring tape or string extremely tightly; you want a relatively loose fit so that you have room to move.
• Chest size. Finally, wrap the tape under your arms and around your back to come together at the front of your chest. You want to measure the fullest part of the chest, but do not puff your chest out or hold it in. Just stand naturally with your shoulders slightly back. Once you have your measurement, such as a 38, add an "R" for regular if you stand between 5'7 and 6' tall. If you are between 6'1" and 6'3" tall, you will be an "L" for long. If you are taller than 6'3", look at the sizing charts for your shirt's manufacturer to be sure you are ordering the correct size.

Dress Shirt Materials
You have a number of choices when it comes to dress shirt material. Men's dress shirts are traditionally made from one of the following materials, although other choices are also possible.

• Broadcloth. Essentially identical to poplin, broadcloth is a lightweight, smooth fabric with no pattern in the weave of the threads. Thread counts range from 50 singles to more than 140 doubles, with higher thread counts giving a heavier and more durable fabric weight.
• Dobby or jacquard. Dobby and jacquard refer to two different weaving mechanisms that produce a certain type of cloth, but in practice dobby and jacquard are nearly indistinguishable to all but experts. Both cloths have a "checked" appearance that comes from the ability of the weaver to lift individual threads and create a unique pattern on the cloth.
• Pinpoint oxford. Pinpoint oxford is a bit thicker and has a little more shine than broadcloth, although it does not shine as much as twill. Pinpoint oxford, or just pinpoint, is distinguished from Oxford cloth in that it generally has a finer weave and a higher thread count, making it more luxurious and softer to the skin.
• Pima. Pima is the name of a certain type of cotton originally grown in Peru and brought to the southwestern United States. Pima is used to create very sturdy, strong cotton cloth used in dress shirts. While not as soft as some other fabrics, pima cotton clothing is extremely flexible and durable.
• Twill. Twill is a fabric with a distinctive pattern such as herringbone or houndstooth that is created by a weft thread running over and under multiple warp threads. Twills are durable and soft, generally having a bit more shine than poplin or broadcloth.
